Hi, my name is Michaela

and travelling fuels my soul.

British-born, China-based, and endlessly curious, I’ve spent the past decade uncovering the soul of Asia – one bite, one street, and one story at a time.

I started Uncovering Cities as a way to blend my passions for food, travel, and storytelling into something meaningful: a space for people who want more than just a checklist. This isn’t about chasing the most Instagrammable spots—it’s about discovering the dim sum shop that’s been family-run for 70 years, the backstreet noodle joint that locals swear by, or the hotel experience that stays with you long after you’ve checked out.

From Nantong to Hong Kong to Shanghai – and beyond.

I first moved to China over 10 years ago, originally landing in Nantong, before heading over to Hong Kong, and then finally making Shanghai my home. Living here has given me a unique lens on life in Asia, not as a passing traveller, but as a long-term local. I’ve experienced cities not just through sightseeing, but through late-night snacks, language learning, missed trains, neighbourhood rituals, and friendships that span cultures.

What is Uncovering Cities?

It’s a travel and food blog for people who like their adventures grounded in reality. I create guides, videos, and resources for travellers who want to connect with a city’s everyday beauty: from where to find the best dumplings, to how to use the metro, to which café gives you a real feel for the neighbourhood.

Let’s uncover together.

Whether you’re planning your first trip to Asia or looking for new ways to experience the cities you thought you knew – welcome.

You can start with my travel guides, check out my latest Instagram reels, or work with me.
